Text, instant messaging and e-mail are all set to land in a unified Facebook inbox.
Facebooks much-hyped e-mail service are here; but it is certainly not the epic Gmail rival some tech fanatics had hoped for. It is actually more of a restart of the entire messages offer on social networks, so you can access the chat, Email and text messages in one place.
The core of your changes is what Facebook calls "Social Inbox"; This means that only messages from your friends and their friends will display in your main mailbox. Spam or mail from people who aren't on Facebook, will land in the "other" mailbox. but these can easily be moved to the main folder and you can change the settings so that as many or as few important messages in your Inbox by Central.
There should be access to the entire conversation history, so you can see all your messages with a friend or a group, in one place, whether email, texts and chats; and best of all, messages must not come from the Facebook service, so that your friends who aren't on board can still find you easily.
And while all Facebook users will be able to get a e-mail address @ facebook.com, Zuckerberg and co. are keen to point out is not your regular e-mail offers. There should be no cc, or Bcc features and you will be able to send messages by just hitting enter, it is rather a way to bring together all types of messages in one place and not priority over others.
The service is due to start rolling out "in the coming months", and while you will not be able to plug e-mail clients due to a lack of IMAP support, Facebook says it will eventually play nice with Mail and Outlook.
Happy ' Disappointed ' let us know what you think about Facebooks new e-mail package on Twitter and, of course, on Facebook now.
